Since it first opened its doors as the centerpiece of the Arts Towada initiative, the Towada Art Center has encouraged people to go out and explore the museum's surroundings, installing artworks across the city that it calls "street furniture." In 2014, Ryue Nishizawa, the world-renowned architect behind the Towada Art Center, was once again invited as director to expand the museum's street furniture along the city's main shopping arcade. New additions included a series of unique benches in a variety of shapes and sizes, which can also be used as planters and vases, to be tended by shop owners along the city's shopping arcade, as well as a large cloud-shaped bench that blends into the landscape of the arcade. This project is just one example of how N&A is promoting exchanges with the community and creating new landscapes.
