The Shinjuku I-Land Public Art Project was conceptualized by N&A as a way to embrace art as an amenity and bring additional value to the stark urban landscape of Shinjuku, a business district of Tokyo where skyscrapers abound. Each work had a character of its own without reflecting an overarching rationality or economic logic. Instead, N&A sought to present an atmosphere rich in spirituality and imagination, qualities that are sometimes overlooked in Japanese society today. For this project, artists needed to adopt a flexible interpretation of the relationship between art and space. They also needed to demonstrate an understanding of the purpose of the development and the character of the surrounding high-rises. Each of the works installed in the area was commissioned based on proposals made especially for this project, many of which were met with critical acclaim both in Japan and abroad.
