The first full-scale world's fair held in Germany, Expo 2000 saw 173 countries, regions, and international organizations participate under the theme of "Humankind - Nature - Technology." The Japanese pavilion, built from recycled paper tubes, was designed by architect Shigeru Ban to be fully recyclable, while the exhibition inside, themed "The Shape of Paper, The Soul of the Garden," was supervised by Fumio Nanjo. A rock garden motif was used to introduce efforts to tackle climate change, as well as the aesthetic and view of nature present in Japanese culture since antiquity.
