The first edition of the Taipei Biennial to invite a foreign curator (Fumio Nanjo), this international exhibition featured works by Northeast Asian (Chinese, Taiwanese, South Korean, and Japanese) artists. The 36 artists' pieces covered a wide range of media and were exhibited not only in museum galleries but also in many other spaces and in the open air. Themed "Desire," the Biennial featured many new works and, along with its program of related events, attracted significant attention.
