Held in conjunction with the 1997 Indonesia-Japan Friendship Festival, this exhibition featured, for the first time in Japan, Indonesia's own strain of realist painting that emerged from the 1970s onward. Understanding new Indonesian realist painting as a "mutant" born as the result of social transformations in this rapidly modernizing country, the exhibition showed 44 oil paintings by 11 artists.
