Venue: N&A Art SITE (1-11-6, Kamimeguro, Meguro-ku, Tokyo) Organizer: N and A Inc., Artgene LLC Support: KENJI TAKI GALLERY ■Artist Statement Over the past two years or so, I’ve been asking people around me and fellow travelers to write down words such as “Love” and “History” on paper. I’ve then reproduced these words faithfully with neon tubes, and created paintings based on those tubes. I’ve deliberately chosen words that are difficult to capture visually. By painting neon tubes that emit light in the form of words, and their electric wiring and frames that reflect the light, I wanted to make the invisible visible, representing each word as a definite presence in front of the viewer. For this exhibition, I focused on the word “Sky”—something I’m sure everyone has looked up at least once—and asked 10 people around me from various backgrounds to write it. The impetus for this was my realization that even though what we see with our own eyes appears obviously true to us, others may be seeing something completely different. Our thoughts and values are shaped by the places, society, and environment in which we have lived. And because of that, even if we’re looking up at the same sky or thinking about the same thing, the scenes we see and thoughts we think are likely to differ. How can we share these differences with each other? These paintings depict not the vast sky that belongs to no one, but personal skies that exist within someone. Nami Yokoyama ■Commentary by Fumio Nanjo About Nanjo Selection I have long been committed to the promotion of contemporary art and have encountered a great number of artists and artworks over the years, and I still visit numerous exhibitions both in Japan and abroad in search of new discoveries. Through my experiences and conversations, I have decided to focus on and highlight relatively young artists who are pursuing their own, unique forms of expression and are beginning to achieve results. Given an artistic environment that is by no means perfect, the Japanese art industry should urgently seek to convey the significant achievements of emerging artists to an international audience while placing their work in the context of art history. Successive exhibitions in this series will introduce about four artists a year. I hope you will enjoy the program. About vol. 4: Nami Yokoyama Nami Yokoyama’s work left a strong impression on me when I saw it exhibited at BankART Studio NYK in Yokohama after the artist was selected as a finalist for the Nissan Art Award (2017). The glow of the paintings’ neon lights in a dimly lit old warehouse made a curious impact. These trompe-l’oeil-like works have since been widely exhibited, captivating audiences and building a following. This exhibition highlights a series of around 10 new works with the word “Sky” written on them. Each painting is based on the writing of a different person, and they are all imbued with the cheerful yet empty impression carried by the word, as well as the openness to possibilities it suggests. Conceptual and minimalist, yet gentle and bright, Nami Yokoyama’s new frontier is a pleasure to behold.
